Christopher Newport Women’s Basketball Upsets Shenandoah 64-49

UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, the Christopher Newport women’s basketball team has defeated the previously unbeaten Shenandoah Hornets 64-49 this Sunday in Winchester, Virginia. Coach Bill Broderick‘s Captains have now surged to a four-game winning streak, showcasing their resilience even in a rebuilding year.

This victory is especially significant as it propels Christopher Newport’s record to 6-2, defying expectations set before the season. Broderick had hoped for a 3-3 start, but his team is exceeding those hopes, particularly after facing tough competition from No. 8 Johns Hopkins and the host Bridgewater Eagles.

In a game that saw the Captains dominate from the start, Sarah Pritz led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds. She was backed by Elizabeth Creed, who added 13 points and 11 rebounds, alongside Hailey Kellogg, who contributed 13 points with four three-pointers.

For Shenandoah, who had aspirations of breaking into the top 25, Addisyn Banks scored 18 points and Emily Williams added 14 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Captains’ strong performance. The Hornets are now 5-1 this season.

Looking ahead, Christopher Newport will host their first home game of the season against Marymount at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Freeman Center. This game presents an opportunity for the Captains to continue their momentum as they strive to solidify their identity in the competitive landscape of women’s college basketball.

As this season unfolds, the Captains have proven they can contend with the best, raising questions about how far they can go in the upcoming games. Stay tuned for more updates on their journey and the latest in women’s basketball as the season progresses.
