The UC Santa Cruz community is gearing up for its annual Holiday Food and Fund Drive (HFFD), introducing a new initiative that will significantly enhance the impact of donations. For the 2025 campaign, contributions will have a “triple impact,” meaning every dollar donated will provide meals for three people for one day. This initiative is a result of the continued support from Tibi McCann and Eric Jensen, who have committed to matching donations up to the first $50,000 raised.
How to Contribute
The HFFD, organized by the Staff Advisory Board, collaborates with Second Harvest Food Bank, ensuring that 100% of donations directly purchase food for those in need. Students can contribute until December 11, 2025, by donating Slug Points, Banana Bucks, and Flexi Dollars. Employees and retirees have until January 15, 2026, to make their contributions, allowing for tax benefits in two different fiscal years. Those interested in creating sub-teams for the drive can contact Nathan McCall at [email protected] for assistance.
Many in the Santa Cruz community face heightened challenges, particularly due to changes in federal SNAP funding. The local government recognizes Second Harvest Food Bank as a vital resource to address food insecurity. The food bank directly supports UC Santa Cruz students through initiatives like the Redwood Free Market and indirectly assists staff and families in the area.
The Importance of Giving
This year’s campaign emphasizes the theme “Give What You Get,” encouraging participants to match their contributions to the amount of healthy food they can access. Based on the standard model of $1 providing meals for one person for a day, suggested donation amounts for various household sizes are as follows:
– Single-person household: $365
– Two-person household: $730
– Three-person household: $1,095
– Four-person household: $1,460
Participants are also encouraged to consider their pets in their calculations, reflecting the campaign’s inclusive approach to community support.
For those seeking assistance, the drive also provides resources for individuals and families in need of food. The process is straightforward, allowing anyone to access necessary support during challenging times.
The Holiday Food and Fund Drive stands as a testament to community solidarity and the collective effort to ensure that no one goes hungry. By participating, members of the UC Santa Cruz community can play a crucial role in feeding hope and fostering resilience in their local area.
