New Bookstore Opens in Mission Hills, Celebrates Local Voices

URGENT UPDATE: The Library Foundation SD has just opened a vibrant new bookstore in Mission Hills, breathing new life into the former Mission Hills Public Library location. Located at the corner of West Washington and Hawk streets, this independent shop is set to become a cornerstone of the community.

This latest addition to San Diego’s literary scene will showcase a carefully curated selection of new books, gifts for book lovers, and a special focus on local and LGBTQ+ authors. “We are proud to be part of the resurgence of independent bookstores in San Diego and around the U.S.,” said Patrick Stewart, CEO of Library Foundation SD. He emphasized that the store aims to unite the community while supporting all 37 library locations in San Diego.

The new bookstore fills the void left by the library’s relocation about a half-mile away to Washington and Front streets. The previous shop, which opened in 2013 at the San Diego Central Library, has inspired this new venture, as both locations promote works by local authors and artists. Proceeds from the bookstore will directly support the foundation’s mission to enhance the San Diego Public Library system.

San Diego City Councilman Stephen Whitburn, who represents Mission Hills, expressed his support: “Turning the former Mission Hills Library into a bookshop and community gathering space is a win for this neighborhood.” His gratitude extended to the Library Foundation SD, the city’s Library Department, and local residents for revitalizing this cherished community space.

Key features of the bookstore include displays of new arrivals, staff recommendations, works by local authors, and a dedicated section for banned books, highlighting the foundation’s commitment to combating censorship. The proximity to Hillcrest, known for its historic LGBTQ+ community, adds a unique dimension, making the shop a significant cultural hub.

In addition to serving as a retail space, the Library Shop Mission Hills will host author events and speaking tours, further establishing its role as a community venue. The opening of this bookstore is not just about literature; it’s about fostering connections and supporting the local community.

As the demand for independent bookstores continues to rise, the Library Shop Mission Hills stands out as a beacon of hope for book lovers and a testament to the power of community engagement. This development is a pivotal moment for Mission Hills, inviting residents and visitors alike to embrace the joy of reading and support local talent.
