Ryan Reynolds recently revealed that his two-year-old son, Olin, has a surprising favorite movie: the critically maligned superhero film, Green Lantern. At The Wall Street Journal’s CMO Council Summit, Reynolds shared this unexpected detail, noting how his son enjoys the film despite its poor reception.
The 2011 film, which co-starred Blake Lively, is often cited as one of Reynolds’ biggest flops. Despite this, Olin watches it daily. Reynolds humorously recounted, “You laugh, but my son, it’s his favorite movie and he watches it every f–king day,” highlighting the joy his son finds in the film.
Reflecting on the movie’s impact on his career, Reynolds acknowledged the challenges he faced at that time. He recalled, “Do you understand the work I’ve had to do to get to the place where I can just pass by that screen and not go, ‘Well, we could have [done that differently]?’” This introspection shows how Reynolds has evolved as an actor since then.
He also discussed his growth during the film’s production, stating, “That was a time in my life when I was, ‘Yes, sir. No, sir. How high can I jump, sir?’” This admission illustrates the pressures he faced and how they shaped his current approach to acting and life.
In an effort to instill valuable lessons in his children, Reynolds emphasizes the importance of discussing failures. “My kids, all they see is a winner,” he explained. “When I go outside, I get pats on the back and it’s a selfie parade, and I oblige everyone pretty much. My kids only see that. So, I’ve learned lately to make sure [I am] talking about the failures and how that is literally the base and ingredient for everything else.”
Reynolds’ reflections extend to his experiences as a parent. He humorously compared raising his daughters—James, Inez, and Betty—to parenting Olin. “Three girls—just so easy,” he joked during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers. He added, “And then the boy, who’s gotta break everything,” underscoring the different dynamics he navigates in parenting.
This candid insight into Reynolds’ life not only showcases his humility but also emphasizes the importance of authenticity in parenting. As he continues to balance his career and family life, his willingness to share both triumphs and setbacks resonates with audiences around the world.
