San Pedro Community Mourns Loss of Beloved Artist and Activist

Arlene Beth Antonovich Harrison, a cherished member of the San Pedro community, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Claude K. Harrison, who died in 2018, and her brother Carl Antonovich, who passed away in 2024.

Known affectionately as Nene, Arlene devoted her life to her family and her community. A passionate environmental activist, she took immense pride in her Croatian heritage, particularly her family’s legacy in tuna fishing, which dates back to her father, Carl Antonovich, and grandfather, John Antonovich, who immigrated to the United States from Korcula in 1907.

A Lifelong Artist and Community Advocate

Arlene was an accomplished artist, celebrated for her oil paintings that captured the stunning coastlines around her home. As a member of the San Pedro Art Association, she often painted en plein air from her beach house, surrounded by fellow artists. Her artistic talents extended beyond the canvas; she was also known for her exceptional culinary skills.

Family gatherings around the dinner table were a hallmark of her hospitality. Arlene’s Croatian seafood dishes, especially her beloved hobotnica (octopus salad), delighted guests and fostered warmth and laughter. She welcomed her sons’ friends into her home, treating them as her own, creating a nurturing environment filled with love.

Arlene’s connection to the ocean was profound. She taught her four sons to swim at Cabrillo Beach, instilling in them a lifelong appreciation for the sea. Family vacations to Catalina Island became cherished traditions, filled with laughter and lasting memories.

Legacy and Community Impact

Her residence on Bluff Place was the backdrop for many significant family celebrations, including 4th of July festivities, Christmas Eve feasts, and numerous birthdays. Arlene leaves behind a loving family, including her sons Robb (Debbe), Craig (Teresa), Karl (Julie), and Chris (Maria), along with multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A private Celebration of Life will be organized for immediate family and close friends in accordance with her wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club, where her sons spent their formative years, and to the San Pedro Art Association, reflecting her commitment to both youth and the arts.

Arlene Antonovich Harrison’s legacy as a devoted mother, talented artist, and community advocate will be remembered fondly by all who knew her. Her impact on the San Pedro community and her family will continue to resonate for generations to come.
