UPDATE: The Jingle Bell Dash in Kingston, NY just wrapped up, with approximately 40 runners braving the cold to support LGBTQ+ outreach initiatives. Taking place on December 9, 2023, the event raised vital funds for the Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center’s youth programs, specifically the “Gen Q” initiative.
Participants donned festive attire, some even shedding layers to embrace the holiday spirit despite the chilly temperatures. The run commenced on North Front Street, guiding runners through a scenic eight-block route in the historic Stockade District. Many runners enjoyed pre-race espresso martinis at Hotel Kinsley to keep warm while they awaited the start.
This year marked the event’s second iteration, following its successful launch in 2022. Inspired by similar festive runs like the Santa Speedo Sprint in Albany, the Jingle Bell Dash aims to combine fun and community support. “It’s fun, it’s goofy. It’s great visibility for the queer community,” said Stephan Hengst, co-director of Big Gay Hudson Valley and an event organizer.
Hengst noted that participation doubled compared to last year, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for the event. “Our goal is 100 people next year,” he added, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and fundraising for the center’s programs.
The funds raised during the dash will directly support the center’s critical services for LGBTQ+ youth. According to Richard Heyl de Ortiz, executive director of the Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center, the organization provides essential support to young individuals through programs like school outreach and the “Gen Z Drop-in” event. “We’re always here when a young person comes in, just to talk to someone,” Heyl de Ortiz stated. He highlighted the significance of creating safe spaces where young people can connect and share experiences.
As the event concluded, participants celebrated not just the holiday season but also the collective effort to uplift the LGBTQ+ community. Hengst expressed hope for continued growth, stating, “Everyone participating today helped to raise funds to keep these programs going and to grow these programs.”
