URGENT UPDATE: A 34-year-old man has been arrested in La Mesa after a terrifying incident involving a knife and threats against police. On Saturday afternoon, emergency services responded to reports of a man wielding a knife near Comanche Drive, where he nearly struck an 11-year-old child.
Authorities report that when police arrived, the suspect, identified as Peter DePrince, allegedly made ominous threats to shoot officers from his balcony. Thankfully, both the child and an adult female were able to escape the apartment before the situation escalated further. Witnesses confirmed that DePrince armed himself as they fled.
For approximately three hours, the La Mesa Police Special Response Team and the San Diego Sheriff’s Emergency Negotiations Team worked to resolve the standoff. At around 3:34 PM, DePrince emerged unarmed and was taken into custody. He now faces serious charges, including Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Felony Child Endangerment.
The child was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital for evaluation but fortunately did not sustain major injuries. The child is currently safe and in the care of a family member.
