Ravens Fall Short Against Steelers, Harbaugh Criticizes Execution

The Baltimore Ravens experienced a disappointing loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 3, 2023, with a final score of 27-22. Despite having opportunities to secure a win in the fourth quarter, miscommunication and execution errors thwarted their chances, prompting head coach John Harbaugh to acknowledge the team’s shortcomings.

With just over five minutes left in the game, the Ravens took possession trailing by five points. A strong 19-yard rush from Derrick Henry and a 33-yard pass to Zay Flowers positioned the Ravens near the end zone. However, an overturned touchdown catch by Isaiah Likely after an official review set the stage for a critical third-and-2 play, which ultimately fell apart due to confusion among players.

As the play clock dwindled, miscommunication arose between offensive coordinator Todd Monken and quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jackson attempted to adjust the play, but an illegal formation penalty on left guard Andrew Vorhees further complicated the situation. The Ravens were pushed back to a fourth-and-5, where Jackson’s pass attempt was incomplete, sealing the drive’s fate.

“It’s crazy that that happened,” Harbaugh remarked after the game, reflecting on the missed opportunity. He later expressed regret for not calling a timeout to regroup, stating, “I’ll take responsibility for that one. Shouldn’t happen.”

The Ravens’ struggles in the red zone were evident throughout the game, finishing only two of six attempts. With a red zone scoring percentage of 44.90%, they now rank among the bottom teams in the NFL for this critical statistic. Wide receiver Rashod Bateman voiced his frustration, admitting, “I don’t know at this point” when asked about the offense’s lack of rhythm.

Despite the challenges, Baltimore had one final chance when the Steelers went three-and-out with just under two minutes remaining. With one minute and 56 seconds on the clock, the Ravens began their last drive at their own 26-yard line. However, penalties and a lack of urgency stalled their progress, leaving them with only nine seconds to make a play. Jackson was ultimately sacked by Alex Highsmith, ending the game and the Ravens’ hopes for a comeback.

In a poignant reflection after the game, Jackson stated, “Divisional game that just came down to the last second and the last minute. We have to finish and find a way to put some points on the board.” The loss dropped the Ravens’ record to 6-7, jeopardizing their position in the AFC North as they prepare for a crucial matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Harbaugh concluded, “Suffice to say, we have to be better in those situations,” emphasizing the need for improved execution in high-pressure moments. As the Ravens regroup for their next game, the focus will be on addressing the issues that contributed to their latest defeat.
