Denver Betterment Committee Celebrates 25 Years of Community Impact

BREAKING NEWS: The Denver Betterment Committee marks its 25th anniversary this year, celebrating over two decades of enhancing the community through impactful projects and events. Established in 2000, this dedicated group of 14 members is actively working to beautify Denver and support local businesses, making a significant difference in residents’ lives.

Just announced, member Caryl Tjaden revealed the committee’s commitment to making Denver more appealing for both residents and visitors. “Our purpose is to give the streets of Denver a more appealing look,” Tjaden stated. The committee welcomes new members eager to contribute to their mission.

One major initiative was the installation of 24 ground planters featuring vibrant flowers, replacing previous hanging baskets that became difficult to maintain. These planters, proudly displaying signs that read “Welcome to Denver, Our Hometown,” are cared for by committee members and local volunteers.

To enhance public spaces, the committee also added two benches, memorial gifts located at key spots—one at the drugstore and another at AllyKatz restaurant. Tjaden emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses, stating that both the planters and benches were sourced from Kay Park Recreation in Janesville.

The group has spearheaded numerous projects, including picnic tables, children’s digger backhoes, and decorative elements like bicycle racks and glider swings. Another creative project involved replacing marigold flowers with rocks spelling out “Denver” along the highway, ensuring visibility year-round without maintenance concerns. Seasonal decorations such as cornstalks and sunflowers further enrich the community’s aesthetic.

A poignant project honored Tjaden’s late husband, a dedicated educator. The committee planted a tree across from their home, close to the elementary school where he taught for 26 years. “This tree has been a meaningful tribute for six years now,” Tjaden shared.

Among its most beloved events, the annual Old Fashioned Christmas has drawn significant community interest since its inception in 2003. What began as a single event has now transformed into a highlight of the year, showcasing decorated trees, wreaths, and gingerbread houses. Last year, over 500 votes were cast for visitors’ favorite displays, underscoring its popularity.

The committee continues to thrive on community support, accumulating donations to fund future projects. Tjaden noted, “It’s surprising the number of compliments we receive, especially about the flowers. It pays to do these things.”

As the Denver Betterment Committee embarks on its next chapter, community members are encouraged to participate and contribute. With their impactful projects and events, the committee is clearly dedicated to creating a vibrant and welcoming environment in Denver.

Stay tuned for more updates on their upcoming events and initiatives as they continue to enhance the beauty of our hometown!
