Sierra Vista Fire Department Urges Community Support for Toy Drive

The Sierra Vista Fire and Medical Department is currently facing challenges in its 54th annual Christmas toy drive, with donations coming in at a slower pace than in previous years. As the department aims to provide gifts for approximately 750 children, the urgency to bolster contributions increases, especially with only eight days remaining before the crucial delivery day.

Fire Marshal Don Foster highlighted that the economic climate may be affecting the rate of donations. He noted that recent economic challenges, including layoffs in the area, have led to an increase in the number of families seeking assistance this year. The department has observed a significant rise in requests for help, particularly from new families in the community. Sierra Vista’s status as a military town also influences family dynamics, which may contribute to the heightened need for support.

Reflecting on the origins of this cherished tradition, Foster explained that the toy drive began when firefighters discovered a local family struggling to provide holiday gifts for their children. This experience transformed the department’s role, allowing them to act as Santa’s helpers and bring joy to the community. Foster expressed the fulfillment he derives from this initiative, noting that witnessing the happiness of families during the holiday season is one of the most rewarding aspects of his profession.

The Sierra Vista Fire and Medical Department is actively collecting new toys at all fire stations, providing convenient drop-off locations for community members wishing to contribute. Additionally, they are hosting a special drive-up donation event on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at the ACE Hardware parking lot in Sierra Vista from 16:00 to 18:00. This event will allow residents to donate toys directly, fostering community engagement and support for the toy drive.

Despite the current challenges, Foster remains optimistic that donations will increase as the delivery day approaches. The department’s commitment to ensuring that every child in Sierra Vista experiences the joy of receiving a gift during the holiday season reflects its dedication to community well-being. The ongoing mission of the Sierra Vista Fire and Medical Department, alongside the collective efforts of the community, underscores the importance of supporting children and families, especially during the festive season.
