During the holiday season, Altru Health System enhances the experience for patients and caregivers, transforming the hospital environment into a place filled with seasonal cheer. Staff members go above and beyond to ensure that those who are unable to spend the holidays at home still feel a sense of comfort and community.
Creating a Festive Atmosphere
According to Courtney Caron, a case manager at Altru, the hospital becomes a “home away from home” for many patients during this time. With hundreds of employees dedicated to providing care, Altru emphasizes the importance of making the hospital feel welcoming.
Kortney Clarke, an intensive care unit nurse, notes that while the holiday season is often associated with family gatherings, it is also a time when many people fall ill. “They still deserve to be cared for,” she said, highlighting the commitment of the staff to patient care, even during holidays.
To foster a festive spirit, Altru organizes various events. A food drive in November supports patients in need, while a Thanksgiving tree allows staff and patients to share their gratitude. Additionally, departments participate in an “adopt-a-family” initiative, donating gifts to bring joy to families in need. A candlelight memorial service is held for families grieving the loss of a child, ensuring that emotional support is available during difficult times.
Supporting Each Other
While patient care is paramount, Altru employees also focus on supporting one another. Staff members frequently swap shifts, allowing colleagues time off during the holidays. During Thanksgiving, everyone contributes to a department-wide potluck, reinforcing camaraderie among the team.
“We work really well with each other,” Caron stated. “We do support staff to ensure that everyone kind of gets work-life balance.” To avoid scheduling the same individuals for holidays repeatedly, holiday schedules are often arranged years in advance.
Ken Hanson, senior marketing and communications specialist at Altru, emphasized the importance of recognizing staff contributions. Employees working during holidays receive “holiday premiums” as a token of appreciation for their commitment. “In health care, patient needs don’t pause for holidays, and staffing is critical every day of the year,” he explained.
Despite the extra effort to create a festive atmosphere, Caron reassured that the level of patient care remains exceptional throughout the year. “At Altru, really helping our patients and caring for our community is really who we are, and I think this shines even brighter during the holiday season,” she remarked, expressing pride in the dedication of the staff.
As the holiday season progresses, the work of Altru Health System serves as a reminder of the compassion and commitment that healthcare professionals bring, ensuring that even in challenging circumstances, patients receive the care and support they deserve.
