Natchez, Mississippi, is set to resume commercial passenger flights for the first time in three decades. Starting on July 1, 2026, SkyWest Airlines, operating under the United Express brand, will initiate daily flights from the Natchez-Adams County Airport to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas. This new route aims to provide residents and visitors with direct access to a major travel hub, facilitating connections across the United States and internationally.
The decision to reinstate passenger flights comes as part of a concerted effort by local officials to boost economic development and tourism in the Miss-Lou region. Natchez Mayor Dan Gibson expressed optimism about the potential impact of the new service, stating that the city has been actively pursuing airline connections since 2021.
Economic Boost and Connectivity
The announcement follows an independent study by Visit Natchez, which projects that the new airline service could attract over 10,000 passengers within the first 12 to 18 months. This influx of travelers is expected to invigorate the local economy, particularly in sectors such as tourism and business. “Can you imagine the conferences that are now going to come here?” Gibson remarked, highlighting the anticipated growth in events and gatherings.
In addition to the airline service, the city is nearing completion of a $3 million renovation of its convention center. This upgrade is expected to complement the new route, making Natchez a more attractive destination for both leisure and business travel. The mayor noted that the lack of commercial air service previously hindered potential projects, including a film production that was shelved due to travel limitations. “We have a 100,000 square foot movie studio that is about to be busy,” he added.
Infrastructure Improvements
To support the upcoming flights, Adams County has secured over $6 million in grants aimed at enhancing the airport’s infrastructure. This funding includes $1 million approved by Congress for new firefighting equipment, ensuring safety measures are in place by the time the first flight takes off.
SkyWest Airlines plans to operate the route using a 50-seat Bombardier Canadian Regional Jet 200, with an estimated flight time of approximately 45 minutes each way. Tickets for the new service are already available for booking through United Airlines.
As Natchez prepares for this significant change, the return of commercial flights is seen as a pivotal moment for the community, fostering connectivity and economic opportunity after years without direct air service.
