URGENT UPDATE: Police officers in Queens shot and killed a man early this morning after he allegedly charged at them wielding a box cutter. The incident occurred at approximately 12:25 a.m. on December 21 inside an apartment building located at 1170 Nameoke St. in Far Rockaway.
According to NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera, officers from the 101st Precinct responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic altercation between a father and son. Upon arrival, the officers spoke with the father and his wife before entering the apartment to locate the 29-year-old son, who was not found initially.
As officers exited the apartment, the suspect was seen in the hallway brandishing a box cutter. “The officers gave multiple verbal commands to the male to drop the weapon as they attempted to de-escalate the situation, but he did not comply,” Chief Rivera stated.
In a shocking turn of events, the father retreated behind the officers as the son charged at them with the weapon. One officer deployed a Taser, while another opened fire, striking the suspect. Emergency medical services were called to the scene, and the man was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The responding officers were evaluated at a local hospital and reported no injuries. “This incident demonstrates the dangers that our police officers face every day and how a routine call can quickly escalate into an extremely dangerous situation,” Rivera remarked.
The NYPD Force Investigation Division is currently examining the details of this case as it unfolds. Authorities are urging community members to stay informed as more information becomes available.
This alarming incident highlights the often unpredictable nature of law enforcement duties. Residents of Far Rockaway are left grappling with the reality of such violence occurring in their neighborhood. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
