In San Antonio, a retired volunteer is bringing joy to foster children this Christmas season by crafting handmade wooden toys. John Faultersack, a 79-year-old former Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), transforms his backyard workshop into a hub of creativity and warmth, producing toys that fill children’s hearts with delight.
Faultersack began his journey over a decade ago, using his woodworking skills to create old-fashioned toys for those served by CASA. He recalls, “I started tinkering around the shop and some toys came out.” His passion for woodworking continues to thrive as he follows inspiration. “The wood talks to me once in a while and tells me what it wants to be,” he said with a chuckle.
Creating Joy Through Craftsmanship
While Faultersack has stepped back from advocating in court, his commitment to foster children remains strong. He sees his toy-making as a way of giving back to the community that has been close to his heart. “Do what you can while you can and give back. Pay it back. Pay it forward,” he emphasized.
As Christmas approaches, Faultersack delights in delivering his creations to the CASA office. He describes the staff’s enthusiasm for the toys, saying, “The staff really seems to love them. I don’t know about the kids. The staff plays with the toys, so I don’t know how many make it to the children.” This lighthearted approach not only brings smiles to the staff but also keeps the spirit of giving alive.
Faultersack’s workshop is filled with bits and pieces of wood, remnants from previous projects or materials that did not turn out as expected. “I grab bits and scraps of things that didn’t quite work out or that I was saving for something else,” he shared. For him, each piece is an opportunity to create something special for a child in need.
Lasting Impact of Advocacy
The former CASA volunteer reflects on his time advocating for foster children, emphasizing the importance of support and engagement. “Watching out for them, almost being that surrogate parent,” he noted, conveying the deep connections he formed during his advocacy. He believes that CASA could enhance its impact significantly with more volunteers. “They do good work there, and we need to support them when we can,” he stated.
Faultersack’s efforts exemplify how one individual can make a difference in the lives of others, especially during the festive season. His handmade toys are more than just gifts; they represent hope and kindness for children who need it most. As he continues to create, the spirit of giving remains at the forefront of his work, showing that joy can be crafted, one toy at a time.
