Leonard Hugh Thompson, the father-in-law of Olympic gold medalist Dominique Dawes, has been found deceased following a search that spanned several days. Thompson, affectionately known as “Papa T,” was reported missing after his vehicle was discovered abandoned on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, near Roanoke, Virginia.
Dawes, who made history as the first Black woman to win gold in gymnastics during the 1996 Atlanta Games, confirmed the devastating news on social media. “It is with a very heavy heart that I report my father-in-law has been found and not in the way that we had hoped for,” she wrote alongside a photo of him holding one of his grandchildren.
In her emotional message, Dawes expressed gratitude for the support received during this difficult time. “Rest in Peace, Papa T,” she added. “We take comfort in knowing that he is now with our Lord and Savior.”
The search for Thompson began after his family grew concerned for his well-being. Days prior to the discovery of his body, Dawes had issued a public plea for information regarding Thompson’s whereabouts. She feared he might have experienced a health crisis that left him disoriented. His last known location was in Winchester, Virginia, on the evening of March 4, 2024.
Authorities discovered Thompson’s vehicle abandoned with a flat tire and no keys, leading them to suspect he may have been picked up by a good Samaritan or a truck driver after breaking down. Dawes had urged the public for help, emphasizing her concern for Thompson’s safety and mental state.
“Please help me and my family,” she said in a video posted to social media. “We have been desperately looking for days now with the help of law enforcement.” She described her father-in-law as a “kind, gentle soul” who may not have been aware of his surroundings due to his condition.
As news of Thompson’s passing spread, numerous former Team USA athletes expressed their condolences to Dawes and her family. Olympic gymnastics champion Dominique Moceanu offered heartfelt sympathy: “I am so sorry to hear this, Dominique. Prayers to you all.” Olympic swimming champion Summer Sanders also extended her condolences, stating, “I am so very sorry for your loss. We are sending you and your family love.”
The family is now left to navigate this profound loss, cherishing the memories of Thompson, a man remembered fondly by those who knew him.
