Urgent Update: Gioia’s Chief of Staff Resigns After 10 Years

UPDATE: In a significant leadership shift, Sonia Bustamante will step down as chief of staff to John Gioia, Contra Costa County’s District 1 supervisor, effective February 1, 2023. After a decade of impactful service, Bustamante is transitioning to a new role aimed at supporting the Bay Area’s immigrant community.

This development is crucial as Bustamante has been a pivotal figure in enhancing the lives of residents in West Contra Costa County. Her leadership has been instrumental in initiatives such as the establishment of the Office of Racial Equity and Social Justice, and critical programs like Contra Costa Cares, which provides health care to immigrants, and Stand Together Contra Costa, which protects immigrants from deportation.

Gioia expressed his deep appreciation for Bustamante’s contributions, stating, “Her vision and commitment to community have truly advanced equity and inclusion in our district.” This transition not only marks the end of an era but also highlights the ongoing efforts to uplift vulnerable communities.

Robert Rogers, who has also served in Gioia’s office for 10 years, will take over as the new chief of staff. Gioia emphasized Rogers’ extensive experience and strong community ties, expressing confidence that he will lead with integrity and purpose.

In her new role, Bustamante will direct the SAFE Center/Centro SAFE, part of the Immigrant Action Network. This initiative, fueled by $5 million in funding from Contra Costa County, aims to connect immigrant families with essential services, reinforcing the community’s support system.
