Withings Launches Multi-Function Thermometer for Health Tracking

A new health monitoring device, the BeamO thermometer, has been introduced by the health technology company Withings. Approved by the FDA, this innovative gadget not only measures body temperature but also monitors other vital health metrics, streamlining several health assessments into one compact tool. Launched in November 2023, the device is priced at $249.95 and promises to enhance personal health management.

The BeamO combines the functionalities of a thermometer, stethoscope, and electrocardiogram (ECG) into a single handheld unit. Its thermometer feature provides quick temperature readings. Users simply select their profile and glide the device across the forehead to the temple, avoiding the traditional under-the-tongue method that can spread germs among family members.

Beyond temperature readings, the BeamO allows users to listen to their heart and lung sounds by placing the device against their chest. The ECG function simplifies heart health assessments, eliminating the need for the cumbersome setup often seen in medical offices. With just two electrodes, users can conduct a medically certified ECG in approximately 30 seconds, with results displayed clearly on the device’s LED screen.

Health experts recognize the importance of monitoring heart health proactively, particularly for those experiencing symptoms like dizziness or shortness of breath. The BeamO is positioned as a significant tool for early detection of potential issues, making health tracking more accessible.

According to Paul Buckley, Withings’ Director of Sales and Marketing for the Americas, the device is aptly named the “thermometer of the future.” He explained, “It takes the most fundamental and universally understood action — checking a fever — and layers other critical health measurements, all in one sleek, user-friendly device.”

The BeamO connects with the Withings app, allowing users to log family health data and track trends over time. For an additional $10 per month through the Withings+ subscription, users in the United States and Europe can receive remote cardiac health assessments from a cardiologist within 24 hours. This capability could prove vital during the winter months when viral infections, such as the rising cases of the super flu, are more prevalent. Buckley noted, “This information can help doctors assess respiratory conditions more effectively.”

The BeamO is particularly beneficial for two demographics: parents of young children and the aging population. For parents, the ability to quickly gather accurate medical-grade measurements can alleviate anxiety during late-night health concerns. “BeamO allows parents to quickly and accurately get medical-grade measurements to share with a pediatrician, especially in the middle of the night, reducing anxiety and unnecessary emergency room visits,” Buckley explained.

For older adults, routine heart health monitoring is crucial, especially for those over 50 or with a history of cardiovascular issues. The device enables frequent comprehensive checks, making it easier to manage health as one ages. Buckley emphasized that, “As people age, monitoring heart and respiratory health becomes increasingly important.”

As the BeamO thermometer makes its way into households, it represents a significant advancement in personal health technology, blending convenience and essential health tracking into one device.
