Man Sentenced to Over 11 Years for Fentanyl Overdose Death

UPDATE: A man has been sentenced to over 11 years in prison for his role in a fentanyl overdose that resulted in the death of a Glenwood resident. Theoplus Cardell Richmond, aged 38, received a sentence of 135 months on December 22, 2023, after pleading guilty to third-degree murder in connection with the death of Tyler Roger Kirckof, 31.

The tragic incident occurred on February 20, 2021Pope County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and local police departments. The investigation revealed a complex network of drug transactions leading up to the incident.

Attorney General Keith Ellison emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “What happened to Tyler is a tragedy — one that is far too familiar for so many families across Minnesota. The scourge of fentanyl has caused so much harm and grief in every corner of our state.” His comments highlight the urgent need to address the fentanyl crisis that continues to impact communities nationwide.

Richmond was the last of five individuals charged in connection with Kirckof’s death. His co-defendants, including Samuel Ray Long, Teresa Marie Massey, Jorma Kyle Thornton, and Kevin Richard Lopez, faced various charges and received sentences in 2023 and 2024. Long, for instance, was convicted of aiding and abetting third-degree murder and received a 20-year probation sentence.

The investigation uncovered that Kirckof communicated with Long and Thornton prior to his drug purchase. Phone records revealed that Long coordinated the exchange with Richmond. The evidence pointed to a network of drug transactions that had spiraled out of control, leading to Kirckof’s untimely death.

In a startling turn, Richmond was already incarcerated in a federal prison when he was charged earlier this year. His expected release date is set for August 29, 2028, after serving at least two-thirds of his sentence in custody, as mandated by Minnesota law.

This case underscores the devastating impact of the opioid crisis, particularly fentanyl, which has claimed countless lives across the United States. Richmond’s sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of drug trafficking and its ripple effects on families and communities.

As this situation develops, officials continue to advocate for increased awareness and prevention strategies to combat the fentanyl epidemic. The community is left grappling with the loss of Kirckof and the broader implications of drug-related tragedies that resonate throughout Minnesota and beyond.
