Vanden High Basketball Team Prepares for Nike Tournament in Phoenix

The Vanden High School boys basketball team is set to compete in the inaugural Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Arizona, from March 14 to March 16, 2024. This tournament, featuring 68 teams from across the United States, provides a significant opportunity for young athletes to showcase their talents against top-tier competition.

Vanden’s head coach, Micheal Holloway, emphasizes the importance of this experience for his players. “It’s special for these young guys. A lot of high school kids don’t know if they’re gonna play afterwards or not,” he stated. This tournament will allow them to travel and experience a collegiate atmosphere, essential for their development.

Vikings Face Tough Opponent in Opening Match

The Vikings (6-3) will kick off the tournament by facing Hamilton High School (6-4) from Chandler, Arizona. Holloway believes that the team’s rigorous non-league schedule, which has included games against Division I opponents such as Sheldon and Inderkum, has adequately prepared them for the challenges ahead. He noted, “Every team that we’ve played has been a different style… This will allow us to face some of those similar things.”

Vanden will rely heavily on its key players, including Templeton Fountaine V, who leads the team with an average of 16.6 points per game. Following closely is James Carraway with 13 points per game, while Nate Hibbert contributes 11.9 points per game and has made a team-high 28 three-pointers.

Coach Holloway is optimistic about the potential for these players to not only perform well but also to mentor their younger teammates. “I hope they can transfer some of that over and teach these younger guys what it takes to win at that level,” he explained, referring to his players’ experiences from their section title win in 2024.

Injury Challenges and Player Development

In addition to their offensive strengths, Vanden’s roster faces challenges due to injuries. Senior guard Caleb Rafan is expected to step up with starting point guard Chriseannie Nealy sidelined for the tournament. Rafan has proven his capabilities by averaging at least five assists in five games this season.

Holloway praised Rafan’s versatility, noting, “We always told him from the beginning of the year, you could have went and started somewhere else, but you’re like a sixth starter for us.” With Nealy out, Rafan has the opportunity to take on a more prominent role, which will be crucial for the team’s success in the tournament.

As the Vanden Vikings prepare for this prestigious event, the focus remains on growth, resilience, and the desire to compete at the highest level. The Nike Tournament of Champions not only serves as a platform for showcasing talent but also offers invaluable lessons for the young athletes involved.
