UPDATE: A new government survey reveals that artificial intelligence, K-culture, and the concept of the “authentic self” dominated online discussions in South Korea throughout 2023. Released on December 31, 2023, the findings show a staggering 44% increase in online mentions related to AI compared to last year.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism conducted this survey as part of its “2026 Sociocultural Trends” report, analyzing 538 million pieces of online data from news articles, social media, and video platforms between January and November 2023. This surge in interest highlights both the fascination with AI’s convenience and growing concerns about its implications on jobs, safety, and fairness.
In addition, mentions of K-culture, including hits like “K-Pop Demon Hunters”, rose by 31%. The popularity of K-pop, Korean cuisine, and traditional clothing such as hanbok contributed significantly to this trend, showcasing South Korea’s cultural influence on the global stage.
The concept of the “authentic self” also gained traction, with a 10% increase in discussions surrounding individual identity and self-determination. Terms like individual, identity, choice, and self-determination were frequently associated with this trend, emphasizing a growing desire for personal empowerment among South Koreans.
Lee Jeong-eun, director of digital communication at the ministry, stated,
“Our analysis will help us better anticipate public demand and enhance practical communication.”
This commitment to understanding public sentiment underscores the government’s proactive approach in addressing the needs and interests of its citizens.
The survey also uncovered rising interests in health management, consumption patterns, and fostering relationships and empathy. These findings are crucial as they reflect shifting societal values and priorities among South Koreans.
As we move into 2024, the implications of these trends will be significant for various sectors, from technology and entertainment to education and mental health. Stakeholders are encouraged to monitor these developments closely, as they signal important shifts in public interest and cultural engagement.
Stay tuned for more updates on how these trends will shape the landscape in South Korea and beyond.
