Remembering Sally Ann Sprout Mallard: A Life of Love and Legacy

Sally Ann Sprout Mallard, a cherished member of her family and community, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, surrounded by her husband, Clayton Mallard, and daughters Jennifer and Gwendolyn. Her life, marked by love, dedication, and a commitment to bringing people together, concluded at the age of 89 in Fallbrook, California.

A Journey of Love and Family

Born on September 8, 1936, to Melba Pauline Savage Sprout and Ralph Edgar Sprout, Sally grew up in Torrance, California. She attended local schools, where she first met Clayton in the 10th grade at Torrance High School. Their enduring love story began there, culminating in their marriage on August 5, 1956. Over the next 69 years, they built a strong family life together, welcoming four daughters and creating countless memories.

Throughout her life, Sally exemplified excellence in everything she undertook, from sewing and cooking to home decoration and hosting gatherings. Known for her warm heart, she made every guest feel welcomed and cherished. The couple’s journey also took them to Atlanta, Georgia, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before returning to Tustin, California, and finally settling in Fallbrook in 2002.

Community Engagement and Personal Passions

Sally’s commitment to her community was evident through her active participation in her church and various social groups. She was known for her kindness and thoughtfulness, often bringing people together through her engaging personality. Her love for games was showcased in her talent for bridge, where she not only participated but also taught the game in Iowa and maintained an active neighborhood group in Tustin.

In her retirement years, Sally joined the Fallbrook Tennis Club, where she formed lasting friendships, including with club owner Dorothy Roth and her husband Russ. Sally took great joy in her family, celebrating the births of her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She orchestrated memorable events, from holiday dinners to baby and wedding showers, each gathering a testament to her love for her family and friends.

A particularly memorable occasion was her 50th wedding anniversary, where Sally gathered loved ones to celebrate her enduring love for Clayton. A highlight of the event was the visit from Leonora Costales-Cabesa, an Ecuadorian AFS student who had lived with the family during the 1976-77 school year and remained an important part of Sally’s life.

Sally is survived by her husband, Clayton; daughters Rebecca Mallard (Debbie), Gwendolyn Wilson, Jennifer Artunian (Mike), and Cynthia Swift (Larry); grandchildren including Spencer, Anastasia, and Taylor; great-grandchildren Londyn, Pharaoh, and Treasure; alongside her three sisters, Peggy Olivier, Jeannie Beard, and Linda Redderson, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held for friends and family on January 3, 2026, at 11 AM at Christ the King Church in Fallbrook. Sally Ann Sprout Mallard will be remembered as a vibrant and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories for all who knew her.
