UAlbany Football Hires New Coordinators Ahead of 2026 Season

BREAKING: The University at Albany football program has just announced a major overhaul as incoming head coach Tom Perkovich hires three new coordinators for the upcoming 2026 season. This strategic move aims to elevate the Great Danes’ performance and competitiveness on the national stage.

Perkovich has officially brought on Mike Wiand as the offensive coordinator, Matthew Scott as the defensive coordinator, and Keith Larson as the special teams coordinator. “We are incredibly excited to bring Mike, Matthew, and Keith into the Great Dane family,” Perkovich stated. “Their leadership will be instrumental as we enter this next chapter of UAlbany football.”

Mike Wiand joins the Great Danes following a highly successful run at Susquehanna University, where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Under Wiand’s leadership, the River Hawks clinched four consecutive conference championships from 2022 to 2025. His innovative offensive strategies transformed the program into a powerhouse, including producing multiple All-American players.

Meanwhile, Matthew Scott brings over 15 years of coaching experience, having most recently led PennWest Edinboro to its first seven-win season since 2018 and winning the PSAC West Division title. Scott is no stranger to the Capital Region, previously coaching at UAlbany from 2010 to 2014, where he helped the team secure two Northeast Conference Championships and reach the FCS Playoffs.

Completing the coaching trio, Keith Larson returns to the Capital Region after serving as a special teams analyst at Texas A&M and Duke University. During his time at Texas A&M, Larson was part of the coaching staff that led the Aggies to their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff in 2025. His expertise in specialist development is expected to enhance the Great Danes’ special teams play significantly.

This coaching shakeup arrives at a critical time as UAlbany aims to strengthen its football program and foster talent among student-athletes. The fresh leadership is poised to make immediate impacts in recruiting and training, setting the stage for a competitive 2026 season.

Fans and alumni are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates as the Great Danes gear up for what promises to be an exciting new era in Albany football.
