The Young Country Diary series is welcoming submissions from children aged 8 to 14, offering them an opportunity to share their recent encounters with nature. The initiative, organized by The Guardian, invites young writers to explore their surroundings and document their experiences in an article of 200-250 words. This initiative aims to foster a connection between children and the natural world, regardless of their prior knowledge or experience with nature.
Submissions are open until noon on February 2, 2024. Of all the entries received, four will be selected for publication in the newspaper and online, with two articles slated for release in January and two in February. Children who have their pieces published will receive compensation for their contributions. Parents and guardians are encouraged to assist their children in the submission process, ensuring that they are aware of the necessary permissions required.
How to Participate in the Young Country Diary
To partake in this initiative, children must first explore an outdoor setting, such as a local park, garden, or beach. Following their exploration, they should write an article detailing their observations and experiences. The process is straightforward and consists of three steps:
1. Choose a natural setting to explore.
2. Write a concise article capturing the sights and sounds experienced during the visit.
3. Submit the article through the designated form, with the parent or guardian filling out the details.
Photos or drawings can enhance the submission but are not mandatory. If available, parents should indicate in the submission form that visual materials accompany their child’s writing.
Encouraging Young Writers
For those uncertain about what to write, various prompts can help spark creativity. Young writers are encouraged to use their senses—describing what they saw, heard, and felt during their encounter. Taking notes can assist in recalling important details later. They can also research their observations to provide additional context or interesting facts, such as the lifespan of a butterfly or characteristics of a specific plant.
The submission deadline for this winter edition is set for 10 PM on November 2, 2023. Children based in the UK within the specified age range are eligible to participate. If selected for publication, parents will be contacted to finalize details, and payment will be provided for the child’s work.
In previous editions, young contributors have shared engaging stories, such as Mia, 11, who wrote about discovering a unique fungus, and Sachin, 8, who observed a rare bird. This initiative not only encourages writing skills but also promotes a deeper appreciation for nature among young people.
For more information about how to get involved, parents can refer to the submission form provided by The Guardian. This initiative promises to be an exciting opportunity for young nature enthusiasts to express their creativity and connect with the environment around them.
