Helena High School’s girls basketball coach, Lake Graham, has quickly made a name for himself through his passionate approach to coaching. A family man at heart, he has been married to his wife, Laney Graham, for six years, and together they are raising two young boys, Luke, aged two, and Lincoln, just ten months old.
Graham’s journey into coaching was not a straightforward path. Initially, he entered the education field without plans to coach basketball. However, when the opportunity arose at Liberty Park Middle School, he quickly discovered a deep-seated passion for the sport. “I found that I enjoyed it more than I have ever enjoyed anything,” Graham said. He began coaching at the age of 27 and has since dedicated himself to developing his players both on and off the court.
Mentorship and Influence
A significant influence in Graham’s coaching philosophy comes from his former high school coach, Faron Key. Currently the head coach at Wallace State Community College, Key left a lasting impact on Graham, who models his coaching style after the lessons learned during his time as a player. “I model everything I do as a coach after the example that he set for me while I was his player,” Graham stated, highlighting the importance of mentorship in his career.
Reflecting on his playing days, Graham recalls some of his proudest moments. As a senior, he helped set a school record for wins, a memory that he cherishes. Now, as the coach of the Helena girls basketball team, he has achieved a similar milestone, leading the team to set a new win record last season. This accomplishment has not only brought pride to the program but has also inspired his players to strive for excellence.
Life Beyond Coaching
When not coaching or working at the school, Graham cherishes his time with his family. He emphasizes the importance of spending quality moments with his wife and children, finding joy in the simple pleasures of family life. “When I’m not working, I am spending as much time as I possibly can with my wife and boys,” he shared.
Graham’s commitment to his players and his family underscores a dedication that goes beyond the basketball court. As he continues to build the program at Helena High School, his passion and leadership promise to leave a lasting legacy within the community and the sport.
