Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Discuss Netflix’s New Filmmaking Approach

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, two acclaimed Oscar-winning actors, have reunited for the Netflix crime thriller The Rip. During a recent appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, they revealed insights into the unique filmmaking approach adopted by Netflix, particularly focusing on how it differs from traditional methods.

Netflix’s Unique Approach to Filmmaking

Damon explained that the conventional structure they are accustomed to in action films was not prioritized during the making of a Netflix movie. Traditionally, filmmakers plan for three major action sequences—one in each act—with a significant investment in the climactic finale. However, Netflix’s strategy seems to emphasize engaging viewers from the outset. “They want a big moment in the first five minutes,” Damon stated. “And it wouldn’t be terrible if you reiterated the plot three or four times in the dialogue because people are on their phones while they’re watching.”

This approach highlights a shift in how entertainment is perceived and consumed, particularly in the streaming era. The need to capture viewers’ attention quickly reflects the changing dynamics of audience engagement in a digital landscape.

A Counterexample: ‘Adolescence’

Affleck pointed to Netflix’s recent release Adolescence as a notable exception to this trend. Unlike the typical formula that emphasizes rapid plot recaps and high-octane action, Adolescence has been praised for its darker, more nuanced storytelling. “It didn’t do any of that,” Affleck argued, referring to the conventional guidelines. “And it’s great. It’s dark and tragic, focusing on a character who learns his child is accused of murder, with long takes and minimal dialogue.”

This contrast illustrates that while Netflix may be steering films towards a more formulaic approach, there remains room for creatively ambitious storytelling that can captivate audiences without adhering to conventional expectations.

Both The Rip and Adolescence are currently available for streaming on Netflix, highlighting the platform’s diverse offerings. As audiences continue to evolve in their viewing habits, it will be interesting to see how filmmakers adapt their strategies to balance engagement with artistic integrity.
