Joseph Fredrick ‘Fritz’ Schmitt, aged 65, passed away peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with brain cancer. His family announced his death on January 13, 2026, prompting an outpouring of love and memories from those who knew him.
Born on June 5, 1960, in Dodge City, Kansas, Fritz was the son of Fred and Kay Schmitt. He grew up in Offerle and Great Bend, Kansas, where he completed his high school education. Following his graduation, he attended Colby College, during which he gained recognition as “John McKay,” a popular radio DJ at KHOK station.
Fritz’s journey took a significant turn when he moved to Springfield, Missouri, to pursue a life in ministry with the Assemblies of God. While there, he discovered a calling to the medical field, leading him to enroll at Burge School of Nursing. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Lora, and the couple married in 1991. They graduated together in 1992, marking the beginning of a shared journey dedicated to service.
Devotion to Community and Family
Over his 33-year career, Fritz served as a CCU/MICU nurse, making a profound impact on countless lives in the Springfield community. His passion for learning, research, and open debate defined his career and personal life. Friends and colleagues remember him for his unwavering dedication to both his faith and family.
Fritz’s personality shone through in his love for humor, particularly his collection of dad jokes and pranks. An avid coffee enthusiast, he also had a special fondness for Christmas music, which resonated with those who celebrated the season with him.
He is survived by his children, Hannah and Micah; his mother, Kay; and his siblings, Brad and Rhonda. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Schmitt; his sister, Renee Schmitt; and his wife, Lora Schmitt, who passed earlier.

Graveside services were held at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens located at 3506 N. National in Springfield, Missouri. Many gathered to pay their respects and share stories that highlighted Fritz’s impact on their lives.
