Rose Byrne Celebrates Oscar Nomination, Prepares for New Projects

Rose Byrne has made headlines with her first Oscar nomination for her standout performance in A24’s dark comedy, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. In a recent conversation with Deadline, she discussed upcoming projects, including the production timeline for Platonic Season 3 and her new series, The Good Daughter, alongside insights into her personal life.

The third season of Platonic, an Apple TV comedy where Byrne stars opposite Seth Rogen, is set to begin filming in the summer. Byrne expressed her excitement about this project, stating, “I think we’re going to start shooting in the summer.” Before diving into the comedy, she will rehearse for a production of Noël Coward’s play, Fallen Angels, which is scheduled to debut on Broadway this spring at the Todd Haimes Theatre. This marks her return to the stage after nearly five years, and she described the play as “razor sharp” and a significant milestone in her career.

In addition to Fallen Angels, Byrne is thrilled about her role in The Good Daughter, a gripping crime drama limited series on Peacock. Starring alongside Meghann Fahy of The White Lotus, she praised Fahy’s talent, saying, “She’s unbelievable. Talk about range, talk about unexpected. She’s just so captivating on screen.” Byrne characterized the series as a “really great genre piece” comprising six episodes filled with tension, plot twists, and emotional depth.

Byrne’s recent accolades include winning her first Golden Globe for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. During her acceptance speech, she humorously noted that her partner, Bobby Cannavale, missed the ceremony to acquire a bearded dragon from a reptile expo, a moment that resonated with audiences. Speaking from Australia, where she was awake in the middle of the night, Byrne confirmed that the new pet is “adorable” and has settled in well at home.

In her Oscar-nominated role, Byrne portrays Linda, a woman grappling with personal turmoil, including her child’s mysterious illness and a strained relationship with her therapist, played by Conan O’Brien. Reflecting on her nomination, she expressed disbelief and joy, stating, “It feels so surreal, and I just screamed. I screamed, I screamed, I screamed. I just cannot believe it. It’s such an honor.”

Byrne emphasized that the film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival a year ago, is a “tiny movie” but a “real art piece” that has been recognized alongside larger studio productions. She noted, “Being trapped inside this character was the most challenging thing I’ve ever done and also the most liberating, in a way. Like, I got to do everything.”

While Byrne originally gained recognition from her role in the FX legal thriller Damages, she has since become a prominent figure in the comedy genre, with notable performances in films like Bridesmaids and Neighbors, as well as series like Physical and Platonic.

Despite her success, Byrne maintains a grounded perspective on her career, expressing that “expectation is a curse.” She initially approached acting with an open mindset, saying, “I just wanted to work. I just loved the work so much.”

Looking ahead, her immediate goal is simply to “get a good night’s sleep,” while she aspires to continue showcasing her versatility as a performer. “I feel lucky to have been able to try so many different genres,” she said. “I guess [I’d like] to keep doing that, to keep trying to carve out different things, and search for things that are challenging.”

Byrne’s nomination for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You represents the sole recognition for the film in this awards season. Competing against her in the Best Actor category are Jessie Buckley for Hamnet, Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue, Renate Reinsve for Sentimental Value, and Emma Stone for Bugonia. Earlier in her awards trajectory for this film, Byrne received the Berlin Film Festival’s Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance and has garnered nominations from various prestigious awards, including the Critics Choice Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards.

As Byrne navigates the excitement of her nominations and upcoming projects, her passion for her craft remains evident, promising even more compelling performances in the future.
