Renowned Swedish crime writer and screenwriter Camilla Läckberg has reached new audiences with the North American premiere of her series, “Camilla Läckberg’s Erica,” now available on MHz Choice. This six-episode show is the first French-language adaptation of her bestselling mysteries, featuring stories from her acclaimed Fjällbacka series. The series includes adaptations of her novels, including The Ice Princess, The Preacher, and The Stonecutter.
The series stars Julie De Bona as Erica, a crime writer who returns to her hometown to investigate the mysterious death of her friend Alexandra. Initially deemed a suicide, Erica believes otherwise and embarks on her own investigation. Alongside her, Grégory Fitoussi portrays police captain Patrick Saab. This adaptation follows previous projects by Läckberg, including “Camilla Läckberg’s Fjallbacka Murders” and the earlier series simply titled “Camilla Läckberg.”
The adaptation to French culture involved changes to settings and character names, but Läckberg ensures that the core of her stories remains intact. “I loved the idea of Erica going French,” she stated in a recent email interview. “Of course, changes have to be made… but I still recognize my characters and stories very well.”
Läckberg, who has sold over 35 million copies of her books in more than 60 countries, has embraced the global appeal of her stories. “I am very happy that my stories are travelling all over the world. It is a very special feeling,” she said. Despite their international success, she remains committed to her creative process without tailoring her writing for a specific audience.
Looking ahead, Läckberg is excited about the potential for more adaptations of her work. An Italian version of “Erica” is also in the works, which she describes as distinctly different but still true to her original vision. “During the autumn, I visited the set of the Italian adaptation, and it was an amazing experience,” she noted.
In addition to her literary success, Läckberg has ventured into television and film, expressing a growing passion for these mediums. She is currently involved in multiple projects, although specifics remain under wraps. “I just simply love storytelling, in any shape or form,” she remarked.
Collaboration is key in her projects, as Läckberg is actively involved with producers throughout the creative process. She co-owns two production companies, Creative Society and Bad Flamingo. Her latest project from Bad Flamingo is a film titled “The Dog,” set in Kenya, which has already garnered nominations and awards at various international film festivals.
Beyond her writing and production roles, Läckberg has also made appearances on Swedish television, including a stint on “Dancing With the Stars” in 2012, which she described as one of the most enjoyable experiences of her life. Her enthusiasm for performance led her to participate in additional TV competitions and cameos in Swedish soap operas.
Läckberg’s ambitions extend to Hollywood, where she dreams of creating projects that resonate internationally. “My biggest dream, however, is to write something for TV or film that gets done in America,” she shared. “I mean—who doesn’t dream of Hollywood?”
The adaptation of her works into international TV series marks a significant new chapter in her career. Läckberg has already seen success with “The Glass Dome” on Netflix, which has received positive reviews globally.
As she looks forward to future projects, Läckberg is also excited about her children’s book series, “Super-Charlie,” which recently premiered as an animated film and has been sold to over 50 countries. Additionally, her family has launched their own reality show, “The Läckbergs,” further expanding her media presence.
With plans for 2026 already on her mind, Läckberg continues to explore new storytelling avenues, reflecting her enduring passion for crafting compelling narratives.
