Houston Rockets Fall Short Again Due to Free-Throw Struggles

The Houston Rockets suffered another disappointing defeat on January 18, 2024, falling 128-122 to the Philadelphia 76ers in overtime. The loss marked the Rockets’ third consecutive setback, with free-throw shooting once again playing a critical role in their inability to secure a win.

Throughout the contest, the Rockets faced challenges, trailing at halftime and entering the fourth quarter behind. Despite their struggles, rookie guard Reed Sheppard delivered a standout performance, contributing significantly during the final quarter. His offensive burst helped the team claw back into contention, allowing the Rockets to take a late lead of 118-113 after Tari Eason hit two consecutive three-pointers.

As the clock wound down, the Rockets found themselves in a precarious position. They managed to score just two more points in regulation, relying on a controversial missed goaltending call involving Kevin Durant to keep them in the game. Although they secured a second chance in overtime, the team struggled to find their rhythm and was ultimately outscored 13-7.

While multiple factors contributed to the loss, including being outrebounded and committing 16 turnovers, the Rockets’ free-throw shooting was particularly detrimental. In Thursday’s game, the team converted only 50% of their attempts from the charity stripe, finishing 12 of 24. Given that they lost by six points after overtime, this statistic highlights a critical area of concern.

This free-throw shooting issue has plagued the Rockets throughout January. Currently, they rank last in the NBA for the month with a dismal average of 68.3%. Players like Alperen Sengun, Steven Adams, and Jabari Smith have seen their free-throw percentages decline markedly, resulting in missed scoring opportunities.

Despite shooting 45% from beyond the arc and 46% from the field, the Rockets’ inability to capitalize at the free-throw line has consistently cost them games. As the season progresses, the team must address these shortcomings if they hope to remain competitive in tight matchups, particularly as they strive for playoff contention.

In professional basketball, every point counts, especially in closely contested games. The Rockets must improve their free-throw shooting to enhance their chances of winning and avoid further heartbreak in future contests.
