Remembering Irene B. Dettmers: A Life of Love and Resilience

Irene B. Dettmers, a beloved member of the Northbrook, Illinois community, passed away on January 6, 2026, after a courageous nine-and-a-half-year battle with lung cancer. She was 88 years old. Irene, originally from Winnetka, Illinois, is remembered for her unwavering spirit and dedication to her family and friends.

Born to the late Vern and Ray Bennigsen, Irene was married to the late Leonard Dettmers and was also the spouse of the late Michael Feltes and the late Robert Cronin. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Cronin, her sister, Dorothy Pryor, and her brother, John Bennigsen.

Irene’s legacy endures through her children, Jerry Cronin and his wife Staci, and Beth Glass and her husband Chris. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Connor and Natalie Cronin, Chris and Holly Cronin, and Brad and Blake Glass. Additionally, her extended family includes stepchildren Leigh Klobucar (Jack), Laurie Dettmers (Roger Kopecki), Jane Bakey (Patrick), Michael Feltes (Betsy), Linda Feltes, Laura Feltes, and Carolyn Feltes (Doug DuFrane). Irene cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who held a special place in her heart.

Commemoration and Final Farewell

Visitation for Irene will take place on Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 09:00 until the time of the Mass at 10:00 at St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook Parish, located at 1809 Walters Avenue, Northbrook, IL 60062. Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating her life and sharing memories.

In honor of Irene’s compassionate nature, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to one of her favorite charities, the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, situated at 1140 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL 60607-2906. This charitable organization, which supports at-risk youth, reflects Irene’s commitment to helping others.
