Community Mourns the Passing of Cathy McCurdy, 74, Advocate

Catherine “Cathy” Shea McCurdy, aged 74, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 3, 2025. Her death was attributed to complications related to diabetes. Born in Queens, New York, Cathy was a prominent figure in the Hermosa Beach community, known for her extensive volunteer work and dedication to local education.

Growing up in Hermosa Beach, Cathy graduated from Redondo Union High School in 1969. In 1978, she married Richard H. “Dick” McCurdy, and together they operated the family business, Shea Company, specializing in glass. While their professional contributions were significant, it was their commitment to community service that truly defined their legacy.

Throughout her life, Cathy McCurdy was deeply involved in various local initiatives. She served on the Hermosa Beach School Board and dedicated many years to working at the Hermosa Valley School. She was instrumental in founding the Kiwanis Builders Club at the school, fostering leadership and community service among students. Cathy also supported the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and the Sister City Association, further enhancing educational opportunities in the area.

Community Service and Recognition

Cathy’s commitment to public service extended beyond education. For nearly a decade, she represented Hermosa Beach on the LA County Beach Commission, advocating for important coastal issues. Both Cathy and Dick were active members of the Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach, where they took on various roles, including that of President. Her contributions to the community were recognized when she was awarded the title of “Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year” in 1998.

Her passing has left a profound impact on the community. Friends and colleagues remember her as a passionate advocate for education and a tireless volunteer who worked to improve the lives of those around her.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on February 21, 2026, at St. Cross Episcopal Church, located at 1818 Monterey Blvd., Hermosa Beach. Following the service, a celebration of Cathy’s life will take place at the Kiwanis Hall, situated at 2515 Valley Drive, Hermosa Beach. The community is invited to honor her memory and contributions in a gathering that reflects her commitment to service and education.
