Beloved Engineer Alexander Yerman Passes Away at 99

UPDATE: Alexander J. Yerman, a cherished family man and distinguished engineer, has passed away at Albany Medical Center in Schenectady, NY, on January 28, 2026, at the age of 99. His death marks the end of a remarkable life filled with significant contributions to both his profession and his community.

Born on August 3, 1926, in Wilmerding, PA, Yerman dedicated his life to family, education, and service. After moving to Turtle Creek in 1929, he graduated as Valedictorian from Turtle Creek High School in 1944. His patriotism drove him to serve in the United States Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946, where he earned a reputation for commitment and bravery.

Following his military service, Yerman pursued a degree in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University), graduating in 1950. He then embarked on a prolific 41-year career at General Electric, significantly impacting the company’s General Engineering Lab and Corporate Research Lab.

Yerman’s personal life was equally inspiring. He met his beloved wife, Ellen Quinn, at a Great Books Program in Schenectady and married her in 1955. Their life together was filled with joy until her passing in 1994. He is survived by his daughter Fran Cullen, son-in-law Michael, and grandchildren Patrick, Eric, Ciara, and Stratton Yerman.

An avid reader and lifelong learner, Yerman was actively involved in several scientific organizations, including the American Chemical Society and the Electrochemical Society. His dedication to education and personal growth inspired many in his community.

Yerman’s family will hold calling hours on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Glenville Funeral Home, located at 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Saratoga Road, Glenville. Interment will take place at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna.
