Marianna Police Sergeant David Herndon Honored with VFW Award

The Marianna City Commission recognized Sergeant David Herndon of the Marianna Police Department on March 15, 2024, honoring him with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) National Law Enforcement Public Servant Citation. This award reflects Herndon’s dedication to public service and his professional excellence, acknowledging his proactive role in community safety.

Tyler Schaeffer, a representative from the VFW, presented the award to Herndon during a city commission meeting. He highlighted that Herndon was nominated by Captain Tyler Scarborough of the Marianna Police Department, underscoring the respect he garners from his colleagues. Schaeffer explained the importance of the award, stating, “Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars selects emergency medical technicians, law enforcement officers, firefighters, dispatchers, and explosive ordinance disposal technicians to receive the VFW Public Servant Awards.”

In his remarks, Schaeffer emphasized that this recognition holds significant meaning for veterans. “When we leave our families to serve,” he stated, “we do so trusting that dedicated first responder personnel like Sergeant Herndon are safeguarding our communities with professionalism, integrity, and courage.”

Colleagues describe Herndon as a steady and reliable presence, always ready to take on various roles to support his team. His commitment to service often goes unnoticed until it is needed, reflecting a career focused on helping others rather than seeking the spotlight.

Following the presentation, Herndon expressed gratitude for the recognition. “To be recognized by the patrol division, the guys and ladies I work with, that means so much to me,” he said. “That’s who I do this for.”

The award also resonates deeply with Herndon on a personal level due to his family’s military background. His grandfather, Sergeant Charles T. Green, served two tours in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Division and was a proud member of the VFW. Herndon described Green as one of his greatest inspirations, stating, “To be presented this award by the VFW means more to me than I can describe.”

Herndon’s connection to his grandfather extends beyond admiration. He has served as a sergeant with the Marianna Police Department for the past ten years, and he is affectionately known as “Sarge,” a nickname that mirrors his grandfather’s legacy. “Most everyone calls me the same,” he noted, adding that he wears his grandfather’s chevrons on special occasions, including the award ceremony.

During the event, Herndon wore the chevrons given to him by his grandmother after his promotion to sergeant, honoring his grandfather’s memory. “I’ll wear them tonight in honor of him,” he stated.

The recognition of Sergeant David Herndon serves as a powerful reminder of the selfless dedication that keeps communities safe. His career exemplifies the values of service, humility, and a strong sense of duty, passed down through generations. The VFW award not only celebrates Herndon’s achievements but also highlights the vital role of first responders in fostering safe and secure environments for all.
