A scholarship opportunity of $2,000 is now available for women from West Kauai. The PEO Chapter L-Hawaii, based in Lihue, announced this initiative in memory of Lois Robinson Somers and Lawrence Hutchinson Somers. Application forms can be accessed through the chapter’s website at www.peokauai.org under the Somers Scholarship tab.
PEO, which stands for the Philanthropic Educational Organization, is a nonprofit committed to advancing women through education. With nearly 5,500 chapters across North America, it stands as one of the oldest women’s organizations, uniting over half a million women who share a passion for supporting female education. Since its establishment, PEO International has provided more than $432 million in educational assistance, benefiting over 125,000 women in pursuit of their academic goals.
Eligibility and Application Process
The Somers Family Scholarship was established in 2023 to support a West Kauai woman who is graduating high school or a woman continuing her post-graduate education at an accredited college in the United States or Canada. Eligible applicants must demonstrate excellence in leadership, academics, extracurricular activities, community service, and showcase potential for future success, particularly on Kauai. A minimum unweighted Grade Point Average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required.
To apply, students must complete a cover sheet, respond to five essay questions, submit a school transcript, and provide two letters of recommendation. The applications will be evaluated, and the top three candidates will be interviewed for the final selection. The scholarship recipient will be announced in early May.
For additional details regarding the scholarship, applicants are encouraged to visit www.peointernational.org. The initiative not only honors the legacy of the Somers family but also aims to empower women in their educational pursuits, making a significant impact in the Kauai community.
