“Film ‘Ailey’ Celebrates Five Years with Special Screening”

On February 7, 2025, a special screening of the documentary Ailey took place at the Art Farm at Serenbee, marking the film’s fifth anniversary. Directed by Jamila Wignot, the documentary offers an in-depth look at the life and legacy of the influential choreographer Alvin Ailey, who revolutionized modern dance.

The 94-minute film features early footage showcasing Ailey’s career as a dancer in New York City, alongside his pivotal role in founding the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater (AADT) in 1958. Viewers were treated to a collection of stunning performance scenes that span Ailey’s remarkable career, including iconic works like “Revelations.”

Following the screening, Wignot joined a panel discussion with Rebecca Walker, the daughter of acclaimed author Alice Walker, and former AADT dancer Nasha Thomas. The panel provided insights into the documentary’s creation and its emotional impact, especially given Ailey’s death from AIDS-related complications in 1989.

The film effectively intertwines art and inspiration, showcasing dancers reflecting on Ailey’s profound influence on their lives. Thomas, who performed in the film, expressed her admiration for Ailey, stating, “Mr. Ailey was a visionary. You have to have a vision.”

Wignot noted that she had not viewed the film with an audience in three years, saying, “This has been really lovely. There’s a choreographic feel to this film.” The event not only celebrated Ailey’s contributions to dance but also fostered a sense of community among attendees who share a passion for his work.

The screening serves as a reminder of Ailey’s enduring legacy, inspiring new generations of dancers and artists around the world. As the documentary continues to resonate with audiences, it highlights the profound impact of Ailey’s vision on the arts and culture landscape.
