Preceptor Delta Chapter Launches ‘Little Pantry Houses’ Project

UPDATE: The Preceptor Delta Chapter has just announced a significant community service project to stock “little pantry houses” in Salem and Centralia. During their regular meeting on February 4, 2023, members voted unanimously to support those in need, responding to the growing hunger crisis in Marion County.

The meeting, hosted by Carla McDaniel at her Valentine-themed home, included 10 attendees who discussed pressing local issues. With Pat Herrin unable to attend due to her husband’s surgery in Indiana, the group rallied to cover the serving duties and ensure a successful gathering.

President Liz Edwards led the chapter through a productive session that began with the approval of meeting minutes. The urgency of the food insecurity situation was palpable, prompting the chapter to allocate $500 for stocking pantry houses. The chapter’s commitment to service is evident; they have a long-standing history of supporting local initiatives, particularly in recycling and hunger relief.

During the meeting, Treasurer Nancy Wood provided an update on finances, while Corresponding Secretary Leslie Beard reported on recent outreach, including condolences sent to former member Rose Ann Abernathy in Arizona after her husband passed away.

Diane Barton’s husband has already constructed four pantry houses for distribution in Salem, with discussions ongoing regarding placements in Centralia. The chapter’s quick decision to stock both locations reflects a strong sense of community responsibility and urgency to address local hunger.

In addition to their service efforts, members shared personal updates, creating a warm and engaged atmosphere. Jo Warren expressed pride in her grandson, Zayden, who will be featured on the cover of Gateway Racing magazine. Other members celebrated personal milestones, such as upcoming anniversaries and family achievements.

The meeting also focused on health awareness, coinciding with American Heart Month. McDaniel shared vital tips for maintaining heart health during the winter months, emphasizing the importance of pacing oneself while performing outdoor tasks. Most members showed their support for heart health by wearing red, aligning with the American Heart Association’s “Wear Red Day” on February 6.

As the chapter moves forward, community members are encouraged to support this new initiative. The pantry houses will serve as a direct response to local needs, illustrating how grassroots efforts can make a tangible difference.

The Preceptor Delta Chapter is calling on the community to join them in their mission to alleviate hunger. With their next meeting scheduled, they will continue to strategize and implement effective solutions to support vulnerable populations in their area.
