The Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) in Massachusetts has announced a lottery for a limited edition specialty license plate to commemorate the state’s 250th anniversary of US independence. The plate features a blue background, the year “1776” encircled by 13 stars, and the phrase “250 Years of Independence.” A total of 1,000 plates will be available, with numbers ranging from 1 to 999, including the notable “1776.”
Registrar of Motor Vehicles, Colleen Ogilvie, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “Since last May, the RMV has offered the patriotic-themed higher number plates as part of the Massachusetts 250 festivities. We are so excited to continue this celebration of American and state history by enabling all qualified Massachusetts residents a chance to win a coveted low number on the popular commemorative plate.”
The blue plates have garnered significant interest since their introduction in May, leading to a reported six-week waiting period for new requests, according to the Boston Globe in September. This high demand reflects the plates’ popularity among residents.
Lottery Details and Application Process
The lottery opened on March 18, 2024, and will close on April 17, 2024. Massachusetts residents with an active vehicle registration are eligible to participate. Applications must be submitted through the RMV’s Online Service Center, and there is no fee to enter the lottery. However, winners of specialty plates will incur an additional $40 fee, along with a standard registration fee of $60.
It is important to note that specific plate number requests will not be accommodated. The RMV will utilize an electronic random number generator system to select the winners, who will be announced in May 2024.
The introduction of this lottery not only celebrates a significant milestone in US history but also provides residents with an opportunity to own a piece of commemorative art. For those interested, more information is available on the RMV’s official website.
