Remembering Michael Bermes: A Life of Courage and Joy

Michael Bermes, aged 31, of Aurora, Illinois, passed away on February 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at just five years old, Michael faced his challenges with remarkable strength and resilience. Throughout his life, he exemplified courage, living fully despite his physical limitations.

Born on October 7, 1994, to Brian and Mabel Bermes, Michael’s childhood was characterized by creativity and enthusiasm. His interests spanned various activities, including participation in Boy Scouts and swimming. Michael’s joyful spirit and curious nature were evident to all who knew him. He was not only intelligent but also possessed a remarkable memory, traits that he carried into adulthood.

Education and Achievements

Michael graduated from West Aurora High School in 2013, where he was a proud member of the National Honor Society. He continued his academic journey by earning an Associate’s degree from Waubonsee Community College in 2016, followed by a Bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University in 2019, graduating Cum Laude. His dedication to education exemplified his determination to succeed.

A passionate sports fan, Michael particularly enjoyed following the Chicago Cubs. He shared countless memorable moments with his family, attending games and celebrating victories. Despite facing physical challenges, he participated in numerous concerts, beach vacations, and other adventures, creating lasting memories with his family. Among these cherished experiences was a special Make-A-Wish trip to Seattle, where he met the creators of his favorite video game, Halo.

A Life Filled with Love and Friendship

Michael’s love for movies, especially franchises like Marvel and Star Wars, reflected his vibrant personality. He enjoyed late nights filled with video games and exploring new interests on his iPad. Through online gaming, Michael built friendships with people around the world, showcasing his ability to connect with others despite his physical challenges.

His sense of humor, characterized by wit and sarcasm, brought joy to those around him. Michael was deeply cherished by his family, particularly his mother, Mabel, who dedicated herself to his care and well-being throughout his life. He was a proud uncle to Leah, aged four, and Owen, aged one and a half, and took pride in guiding them through playful chaos.

Michael is survived by his parents, Brian and Mabel; his sister, Andrea, and brother-in-law, Eric Schmittgens; his niece and nephew; his maternal grandmother, Maria “Cuca” Elizondo; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. His bond with cousin Max was especially close, representing friendship and loyalty that Michael cherished greatly.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Michael Bermes Memorial Scholarship at Waubonsee Community College, which supports students with physical disabilities pursuing higher education. Visitation will take place at The Daleiden Mortuary located at 220 North Lake Street, Aurora, Illinois, on February 25 from 16:00 to 19:00. A Memorial Mass will follow at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church at 620 Fifth Street, Aurora, Illinois, on February 26 at 10:00, with interment at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery.

Michael Bermes lived a life rich in love, laughter, and adventures. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts.
