Sublime has signed a partnership with Atlantic Records following a remarkable independent success, marked by an eight-week stint at No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart with their single “Ensenada.” The Southern California band, consisting of Bud Gaugh, Eric Wilson, and frontman Jakob Nowell, is set to release its first full-length album featuring Nowell later this year.
The agreement comes after the band chose to release their recent singles independently through Sublime Recordings, in collaboration with Regime Music Group. This strategy allowed them to retain ownership of their masters while managing marketing and radio promotion internally. The success of “Ensenada,” which was launched under Nowell’s SVNBVRNT venture, established a new standard for the band, surpassing their previous record held by “What I Got,” which had spent three weeks at the top.
Independent Strategy Yields Results
The independent approach has proven fruitful, with “Ensenada” becoming the longest-running No. 1 on alternative radio in 2025. Prior to this achievement, the band’s collaboration with Stick Figure on “Feel Like That” also enjoyed significant success, remaining in the Top 10 for eight weeks. According to the band’s manager, Kevin Zinger, this strategy was a purposeful decision aimed at maintaining control over their music.
“When Sublime began releasing new music, we made a very intentional decision to release the first few singles ourselves,” Zinger explained. He emphasized the importance of trust between the band and their team, stating, “There was no additional financial upside for us in taking on the extra work as the label — nor were we looking for one. When ‘Ensenada’ hit #1 at Alternative radio, that was more than enough reward.”
Following the success of the independent releases, the band received numerous inquiries regarding their future album. Although Zinger did not initially anticipate a partnership with a major label, meetings with Atlantic Records led to a clear alignment of values and vision. He noted, “After meeting with Atlantic, we all walked out knowing we had found the right home.”
Excitement for the Future
Frontman Jakob Nowell expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, adding a touch of humor. “Atlantic told us that if we signed with them they would pay for my experimental cosmetic surgery to have the body and head of a goat,” he remarked. He continued, “We’re gonna change California music history or die trying.”
Drummer Bud Gaugh shared his excitement about the collaboration, recalling his childhood admiration for Atlantic Records. “You have no idea how many records I had growing up as a kid watching them spin around and around with the Atlantic Records label on them. I am beyond excited to announce this partnership with Atlantic Records and Sublime!!”
Bassist Eric Wilson echoed the sentiment, stating, “So great to partner with Atlantic Records finally! I’m excited about our new album; it truly is an organic Sublime album…can’t wait for people to hear it.”
Joe Escalante, who co-manages the band alongside Zinger, highlighted the significance of the collaboration. “Working with Sublime again feels like coming home. It’s also special to be reunited with Kevin Zinger,” he said. Escalante emphasized that the partnership was based on mutual respect and a shared vision.
From Atlantic’s perspective, Johnny Minardi expressed his admiration for Sublime’s impact on music and culture. “Sublime’s impact on music and culture is undeniable, and this next chapter carries the same fearless punk rock ethos that made them iconic,” Minardi noted. He added, “We’re honored they chose Atlantic Records to help drive this new era forward.”
Founded in Long Beach, California, in 1988, Sublime gained recognition with their self-titled album in 1996, which achieved 5x Platinum status and over 18 million RIAA-certified album sales. The band is poised to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their self-titled album in 2026 with two nights at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on April 17-18 and the launch of their own touring festival brand, Sublime Me Gusta, debuting on May 9 in Fort Worth, Texas.
