According to a recent study by language learning platform Mondly, Kansas scored 77.6 out of 100 on an index measuring library usage and funding. The state’s libraries operated on $69.25 of funding per person, ranking them ninth in the nation and exceeding the national average of $51.73 by 33.9%.
With a total funding of $176.4 million in Fiscal Year 2023, Kansas boasts 318 library systems and 362 libraries statewide. This remarkable investment translates to an average of 3.79 library visits per person—ranking fourth in the country—along with 8.4 borrowed materials per person annually, placing Kansas eighth nationally.
What’s even more impressive is that 66% of the state’s population are registered library users, the second-best percentage in the nation. This data highlights not only the state’s commitment to fostering a culture of reading but also the community’s engagement with local libraries.
In contrast, Ohio has topped the rankings, achieving a score of 95.6. Ohioans borrowed an average of 12.99 materials per person, exceeding the national average by an astounding 115%, and enjoyed the nation’s highest per capita library funding of $94.55.
