Community Mourns the Passing of Dennis Schirmer, 77, Beloved Builder

Dennis Schirmer, a respected general contractor and devoted family man, passed away peacefully just before dawn on February 1, 2026, at the age of 77. He fought a long and challenging battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving wife, Robin Somers. Known for his unwavering commitment to family and community, Schirmer’s legacy will be cherished by many.

Born in 1948 in Woodside, California, Dennis was the youngest of five siblings in a modest household. His father, Art Schirmer, a general contractor, introduced him to the construction trade early on. By the time he entered Woodside High School, Dennis was already skilled in building homes. This foundational knowledge would shape his career and passion for construction.

Building a Life and Community

In 1963, Dennis met Robin during their sophomore year of high school. They eloped after one year of college, marrying in the Monterey courthouse. The couple moved to Santa Cruz in 1968, where Dennis constructed their first home, an A-frame in Pleasure Point. In 1972, they settled in the Seabright neighborhood, raising their daughter, Jennifer Dunn, and son, Joe Schirmer, in a nurturing environment.

Dennis was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to his family. He often drove long distances to support his grandchildren, attending their soccer practices and surf contests. His son Joe, who owns Dirty Girl Produce, frequently turned to Dennis for guidance, whether fixing equipment or purchasing new machinery. When Jennifer graduated with a law degree, it was Dennis who celebrated her achievement with a special party.

Throughout his life, Dennis cared deeply for his family. He provided support to his mother, Mary Schirmer, and mother-in-law, Jean Somers, until their passing. After his sister-in-law, Marti Somers, lost her husband, Dennis remodeled her home to help her transition. He was, as many have expressed, “our rock and safe place.”

A Life of Adventure and Service

Dennis’s adventurous spirit shone through in his love for the outdoors and road trips, a passion he maintained until his cancer diagnosis in 2020. He also worked as a property manager for Pajaro Dunes, where he forged friendships with residents, showing kindness and dedication to his clients.

In addition to his work in construction and property management, Dennis was an advocate for social justice. He referred to himself as an existentialist, embracing life’s absurdities while adhering to a high moral code. His friends remember him as someone who made a positive impact in their lives, always willing to lend a helping hand.

Dennis and Robin’s bond was unbreakable despite their eleven-year separation in the 1990s. During this time, Dennis became a river guide for Friends of the River and even returned to San Jose State University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in American Studies while making the Dean’s List. When Robin was injured in a horseback riding accident, Dennis did not hesitate to be by her side, proving their love endured all challenges. They remarried a few months later, celebrating a renewed partnership.

Dennis Schirmer is survived by his wife, Robin; children, Jennifer and Joe; sister, Kathy Schirmer; and five grandchildren: Alex, Colin, Charlie, Calvin, and Pearl. His legacy will also be honored by numerous nephews and nieces, along with their children. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Charlie, Richard, and Michael Schirmer.

A Celebration of Dennis’s Life is scheduled for March 7, 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Center for Farmworker Families in Santa Cruz, TEACH, or the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Dennis’s impact on his family and community will be remembered fondly, as he made life better for all who knew him.
