UPDATE: The first repatriation flight for Hungarian citizens stranded in the Middle East has just departed for Jordan, confirmed Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in a video posted on Facebook. The flight carries 87 passengers, including 83 Hungarians, amid escalating tensions in the region.
The urgent flight left earlier today as Israel’s airspace remains fully closed due to the ongoing conflict. Szijjártó detailed that this flight is crucial for those who had been in Israel, with additional support provided to a group of 51 pilgrims who crossed into Jordan by land.
“We are bringing home those stranded in Israel today,” Szijjártó stated. Furthermore, he announced that a second flight will take off tomorrow to repatriate more Hungarians from Amman, Jordan. “On Friday, we will also assist those in Sharm El-Sheikh, as they can leave Israel by land,” he added.
The situation remains dire, with over 4,000 Hungarians reported to be currently in the UAE. Szijjártó is actively communicating with his counterparts in Jordan and the UAE to facilitate safe returns. “We are doing everything possible to assist Hungarians stranded in the Emirates,” he emphasized.
As tensions rise, airspace closures continue to hinder flights, with Szijjártó stating that a FlyDubai flight scheduled for 1 PM today to Budapest has been delayed, potentially leaving only around 2 AM tomorrow if conditions improve.
The Hungarian government is coordinating closely with Jordanian authorities, who have helped many Hungarians transit from Israel. Szijjártó expressed gratitude for the support, confirming that those assisted into Jordan will be flown home in the coming days.
“I remain in constant contact with my Arab counterparts, working tirelessly to ensure the safe return of all stranded citizens,” Szijjártó assured.
As more flights are arranged, Wizz Air plans to increase its operations from Sharm El-Sheikh to ten flights per week, providing further options for those needing to return home.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops. The Hungarian government urges all citizens in the region to remain vigilant and reach out for assistance through their embassies.
