Annual Home Tour and Art Show Returns to Washington, Ga., on April 4

The annual Tour of Homes and Art Show, organized by the Women’s Club of Washington and the Kiwanis Club of Washington, will take place on April 4, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. This popular event showcases historic properties and features a juried exhibition of regional artists, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Washington, Georgia. The tour has been a longstanding tradition since the 1950s, drawing visitors from near and far.

Historic Homes Highlighted in This Year’s Tour

This year’s tour includes four homes, dating from the 1700s to the 1800s, reflecting the architectural history of the area. Attendees will have the convenience of a shuttle service circulating between stops, allowing them to park downtown and explore the homes without needing to return to their vehicles. Jan Anderson, a board member of the Tour of Homes, emphasized the significance of the variety of homes featured this year, stating, “It’s been going on every year since the 1950s, and we have different homes every year.”

The unique aspect of this event lies in the private ownership of the homes. Joanna Clippinger, an artist and member of the Tour of Homes Committee, noted, “For most larger towns, these homes are now offices or some kind of doctor practices. To be able to live in them, take care of them, enjoy them is really very special.” This perspective highlights the intimate connection visitors can make with the properties.

Art Show Features Regional Talent

In addition to the home tour, the art show will feature invited regional artists, coordinated by Debbie Wells, the chair of the art show. Wells aims to include a diverse range of artworks, enhancing the cultural experience of the event. Participating artists include Josh Thomas and Johnny Mills, with Thomas noting that his current work draws inspiration from local themes: “The series I’m working on now is inspired by the Masters Tournament concessions — the famous pimento cheese and azalea cocktail and my favorite egg salad sandwich.”

Visitors will also have access to local churches, a museum, and the opportunity to visit the oldest library in Georgia, which features a stunning Tiffany window. Anderson expressed her admiration for the library, calling it “fabulous, fantastic.”

Tickets for the Tour of Homes cover entry to the featured properties, while access to the library and museum is free of charge. Tickets can be purchased online at www.wwspringtourofhomes.com.

This event not only promotes the appreciation of historic architecture and local art but also fosters community spirit in Washington, Georgia. With its rich history and vibrant cultural offerings, the Tour of Homes and Art Show promises to be a memorable experience for all attendees.
