Pope Leo XIV Moves into Renovated Papal Apartment in Vatican

Pope Leo XIV officially moved into the newly renovated papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace on Saturday, taking residence in a space famously avoided by his predecessor, Pope Francis. This transition marks a significant moment in the papacy, as Leo opts for a more traditional approach to his living arrangements.

The papal apartment, located on the third floor of the Apostolic Palace and overlooking St. Peter’s Square, underwent extensive renovations over the past ten months. These upgrades addressed critical issues with its electrical, plumbing, and other utility systems, which had fallen into disrepair during the 12-year tenure of Pope Francis. Following his election in May 2023, Pope Leo had initially resided in a modest flat at the Palazzo del Sant’Uffizio, the headquarters for the Holy See’s doctrine office.

In a departure from Francis’ choices, which were influenced by a preference for a simpler lifestyle, Leo has indicated a willingness to embrace the traditional symbols and trappings of the papacy. Pope Francis chose to live in the Santa Marta residence, a communal space typically used for visiting clergy, rather than the more ceremonial apartment, believing that being surrounded by people was essential to his papal duties. This decision, while reflecting his personal values, also resulted in the Santa Marta residence being less accessible for paying guests due to Francis utilizing an entire floor.

The renovations to the papal apartment included significant cosmetic updates as well as essential infrastructure improvements. A crane was observed at the site in the months leading up to Leo’s move-in date, indicating the extent of the work being carried out. After his election, Leo had informally taken possession of the residence, walking through its reception rooms and private chapel, although it was sealed according to papal protocol following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2023.

Conservative commentators have expressed support for Leo’s decision to inhabit the papal apartment, viewing it as a restoration of respect for the papacy’s traditions. This move is seen as a reflection of his comfort with the ceremonial aspects of the role, contrasting sharply with Francis’ more austere preferences.

As Pope Leo XIV settles into his new home, the Catholic Church observes a return to some of the traditional practices associated with the papacy, potentially influencing the direction of his leadership in the years to come. The Vatican has yet to announce any specific plans regarding Leo’s agenda or priorities, but his commitment to embracing the papal lifestyle suggests a notable shift in tone for the Holy See.
