Angels Place Logan O’Hoppe on IL with Fractured Wrist, Call Up Rivero

Angels’ Logan O’Hoppe Out Indefinitely with Fractured Wrist After Foul Ball Injury

Los Angeles, CA – The Los Angeles Angels announced that catcher Logan O’Hoppe will be sidelined indefinitely after suffering a fractured bone in his left wrist when hit by a foul ball during Saturday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

The injury occurred in the seventh inning on April 25, 2026, and medical evaluations confirmed a fracture involving a small but critical bone, dealing a significant blow to the Angels’ catching corps. O’Hoppe expressed frustration over the injury’s impact on his role.

“I’m annoyed because it’s such a little thing, such a tiny bone,” O’Hoppe said Sunday. “Obviously I want to be in there every day.”

The team has not issued a timeline for O’Hoppe’s return, emphasizing the need for cautious rehabilitation. O’Hoppe was showing signs of progress at the plate before the injury, climbing out of a slow start with three hits and a walk in recent games and throwing out two baserunners on Saturday.

To fill the gap, the Angels have recalled Sebastian Rivero from Triple-A Salt Lake. Rivero, 27, who was batting .239 with a .557 OPS in the minors, is expected to share catching duties alongside veteran Travis d’Arnaud, 37, despite d’Arnaud’s struggles this season.

Manager Kurt Suzuki underscored the need for flexibility behind the plate.
“I talked to Trav already and told him, ‘Be ready to play,’ but I’m not going to kill him,” Suzuki said Sunday. “He’s definitely going to play some and Rivero’s going to play some. We’ll play matchups.”

Pitching Staff Shuffle: Jordan Romano, Shaun Anderson DFA’d

In related roster moves, the Angels designated relievers Jordan Romano and Shaun Anderson for assignment Sunday amid pitching staff adjustments influenced by weather and performance concerns.

Romano, 33, signed this winter for $2 million on a one-year deal but struggled with a 10.13 ERA over eight innings, including two blown saves and nine runs allowed in his last three outings after a strong start.

“Unfortunately with the rain coming, we need arms and obviously he didn’t pitch the way he wanted the last few times,” Suzuki said. “It was a tough call… but this was the option that we felt was best for us.”

The Angels called up left-handed pitcher Joey Lucchesi, right-handed pitcher José Fermín, and catcher Rivero to fill the openings. Lucchesi and Rivero were added to the 40-man roster, taking spots vacated by Romano and Anderson; Fermín was already on the roster.

Weather and Lineup Adjustments Ahead

Sunday’s game time was moved up from 6:20 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. local time to avoid rain delays, complicating player routines.

“It is what it is,” Suzuki said. “It’s better than coming back on your off day… you’ve gotta make things work.”

In addition to the catching and pitching changes, Suzuki bumped first baseman Nolan Schanuel from the No. 3 to No. 5 spot in the lineup after a prolonged slump linked partly to an ankle injury earlier this month.

What’s Next for the Angels?

With O’Hoppe out indefinitely, the Angels will rely on a tandem of veterans and up-and-comers during a critical early stretch of the season. Their next game is Monday against the Chicago White Sox, airing at 4:40 p.m. PT on FanDuel Sports Network and 830 AM radio.

The loss of O’Hoppe comes at a time when he was building momentum behind the plate, adding an emotional layer to the team’s challenge going forward. Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how the Angels’ rotated catchers and bullpen respond in the coming days.
