Prada Unveils Kolhapuri-Inspired Sandals and Launches Major Artisan Training Program
Prada has just launched a limited-edition Kolhapuri-inspired sandal collection worldwide, accompanied by a groundbreaking three-year artisan training initiative in India designed to safeguard and evolve the renowned traditional craft.
The announcement came April 27 from Bengaluru, marking a pivotal moment as Prada blends centuries-old craftsmanship with high-end fashion across its global network. The sandals, produced by expert artisans in Maharashtra and Karnataka, draw directly from the iconic Kolhapuri chappal heritage, while incorporating Prada’s signature modern design and premium materials.
Craft Meets Couture: Global Release
Now available in 40 select Prada boutiques worldwide and on the brand’s digital platforms, the collection is part of Prada’s ongoing “Prada Made in India x Inspired by Kolhapuri Chappals” project, originally unveiled in December. This launch signals Prada’s commitment to elevating traditional Indian craftsmanship within the global luxury market.
The sandals are crafted through collaborations with two government-supported entities: Sant Rohidas Leather Industries and Charmakar Development Corporation and Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation Ltd. These partnerships emphasize sustainability and local empowerment in India’s storied leather trade.
Empowering Artisans: A Three-Year Intensive Training
Beyond product sales, Prada is investing heavily in a three-year, fully funded artisan training program to support 180 craftspeople from eight districts historically known for Kolhapuri chappal making. The program offers structured six-month modules focusing on design, technical skills, and market adaptation.
Partnering with premier Indian institutions such as the National Institute of Fashion Technology and the Karnataka Institute of Leather & Fashion Technology, the program provides hands-on learning using modern tools and materials, alongside education on evolving consumer trends and product development.
A Sustainable Future for Traditional Craft
Lorenzo Bertelli, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Prada Group: “Education is a fundamental pillar in ensuring that craftsmanship remains a living practice… this training program translates a shared cultural dialogue into a concrete opportunity for learning and growth.”
Bertelli emphasized that this initiative not only preserves heritage knowledge but also strengthens local communities by enabling artisans to thrive in changing market conditions.
Why This Matters Now
Prada’s announcement reflects a broader trend in the global luxury industry that increasingly values heritage crafts integrated with contemporary design narratives. For Alabama and the broader U.S. audience, this story highlights a global shift toward preserving artisanal traditions while harnessing modern market forces—a model that could inspire similar efforts in American craft industries.
As luxury brands worldwide pivot towards sustainability and cultural collaboration, Prada’s dual focus on product innovation and artisan education stands out as a critical step in supporting vulnerable communities and maintaining cultural heritage.
