Library Access Unlocked: Millions of Titles and No Late Fees Now Open
This week, National Library Week shines a spotlight on a powerhouse community resource transforming access to knowledge across three vibrant Kentucky locations: Ashland, Midland, and Catlettsburg. Residents can now tap into a staggering collection that includes more than 150,000 physical items and over 2 million digital titles—all with no late fees, removing barriers and inviting everyone to explore, learn, and create without worry.
Debbie Cosper, Library Director, urges the public to discover the “countless possibilities” offered with a simple library card, acquired with just a photo ID and proof of address. This card unlocks not only books but a full ecosystem of educational and cultural tools spanning traditional print, audiobooks, DVDs, video games, and cutting-edge technology makerspaces.
Expanded Access in Physical and Digital Realms
Ashland and Midland libraries have stepped up with daily operations, welcoming visitors seven days a week, while Catlettsburg opens six days weekly. For those homebound or on the go, the library’s online platform at thebookplace.org works 24/7, linking patrons to databases, e-books, movies, music, magazines, tutoring, and expert librarian support just a click away.
This extensive digital library includes resources used nationwide, like automotive repair guides, lesson plans for educators, genealogy archives, and real-time student tutoring. The ability to request new titles and interlibrary loans further strengthens community access.
Innovative Facilities Fuel Creative Learning
The initiative goes beyond traditional lending. Ashland offers a hands-on makerspace encouraging creativity with tactile projects, while Midland boasts an advanced audio/visual makerspace featuring podcasting and recording technology—opening doors for budding media producers across the region.
Quiet study rooms and larger meeting spaces are available for booking, supporting study groups and workshops through the week. Public computers and free Wi-Fi extend connectivity to all patrons, bridging digital divides in the community.
A Policy of Inclusion: No Late Fees on Borrowed Materials
At the heart of these services is a bold new policy: no late fees. This inclusive strategy removes a longtime hurdle to using library resources, ensuring that everyone can borrow and learn without penalty.
“Our philosophy is that knowledge and opportunity should be frictionless and accessible to all,” said Debbie Cosper, emphasizing the library’s commitment to community.
Patrons can also access practical services including notary support, copying, scanning, faxing, and personalized reader advisory assistance, tailored to individual needs and preferences.
Why This Matters Now
With digital resources expanding rapidly and physical access enhanced, these libraries become hubs of opportunity amidst increasing demands for remote learning and digital inclusion. The no-fee policy directly supports those experiencing financial hardship, granting unhindered access to educational and cultural tools vital for personal and economic growth.
The library’s far-reaching services connect local Kentucky communities across county lines with reciprocal agreements, making it easier than ever for Alabama and US travelers in the region to tap into this wealth of resources seamlessly.
Residents, students, educators, and lifelong learners are urged to seize these new offerings as National Library Week unfolds, tapping into a resource that is evolving faster than ever to meet today’s challenges and tomorrow’s opportunities.
