Nontraditional Student Susan Shepard to Speak at Community College Commencement

Nontraditional Student Susan Shepard to Headline North Platte Commencement on May 8

Susan Shepard, a sophomore returning to higher education after more than a decade away, will deliver the commencement speech at North Platte Community College on Friday, May 8, from 10 to 11 a.m.

This announcement comes as Shepard’s inspiring journey of academic comeback and artistic accomplishment captures regional attention. Shepard enrolled in fall 2026, pursuing an Associate of Fine Arts in music with an emphasis on vocal performance. Her return to school defies expectations, revitalizing a career long paused by family and relocations tied to her husband’s military service.

From Military Life to Music Spotlight: A Remarkable Return

Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, Shepard spent years moving across the country, seeking the right educational fit. Settling near North Platte since 2021, she discovered the perfect program after relocating: the vocal performance track at Mid-Plains Community College. “The programs I wanted just weren’t available where we lived before,” Shepard explained. “When we moved here and I found the music program, I knew immediately, this is what I’m doing.”

Her experience at the college blends classical training with new exploration into jazz, pop, and Broadway styles. Shepard emphasizes the role of dedicated faculty and a supportive environment in pushing her artistic boundaries and academic excellence. “The instructors here truly care,” she said. “They want you to succeed, and they do everything they can to help you. You just have to show up and put in the work.”

Multi-Talented Artist Balances Family, Music, and Writing

Beyond her studies, Shepard is actively shaping the local arts scene as a private piano and voice instructor. She is also a published author of three fantasy novels. Her balance of creative outlets with life as a mother of four highlights the challenges and resilience of nontraditional students nationwide.

One of the biggest obstacles Shepard faced was regaining her confidence as a performer: “The first time I performed again, I was terrified,” she admitted. “But each performance helped me find that confidence again and helped me realize I can still do this.”

Looking Forward: A Path Toward Music Therapy

Looking ahead, Shepard plans to advance her education by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music therapy, linking her deep passion for music with a heartfelt desire to assist others. Her story offers hope and encouragement to students everywhere who may feel their academic dreams are out of reach.

As commencement speaker, Shepard’s message is clear: “Mid-Plains is a place where you can start, or restart your journey. It’s a great stepping stone to whatever comes next.”

With her address set for May 8, community members and students alike are eager to hear Shepard’s message of perseverance and passion firsthand, marking a celebration not just of graduation but of second chances and renewed dreams.
