Mitchell County Eagles Roar Into State Track Finals After Sectional Sweep
Mitchell County Eagles sent a resounding message this week, crushing the competition at the Class A Division II sectionals held at Bryan County High School in Pembroke, Georgia. The two-time defending state champions, fueled by senior standout Darius Robinson, showcased their relentless drive toward a possible third consecutive state title.
The performance was nothing short of spectacular as Robinson, a dominant sprinter and hurdler, seized first place in the 200-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles, and 300-meter hurdles. Each time Robinson hit the track, the Eagles surged with energy, signaling that he is primed to lead this championship chase.
But Mitchell County’s power extends well beyond one star athlete. The team demonstrated impressive depth, racking up points across numerous events amid relentless South Georgia heat. Distance runner Willie Davis secured huge finishes with second place in the 1600-meter run and third in the 800-meter run. Meanwhile, Parnell Yates claimed third in the long jump as the Eagles dominated hurdles and sprints with multiple athletes placing in the top six.
The Eagles’ dominance extended to relays, securing third in the 4×100, second in the 4×200, sixth in the 4×400, and second in the 4×800 relays. This spread of talent across events highlights the team’s comprehensive strength heading into the GHSA State Track and Field Championships in Athens on May 11.
Southwest Georgia Athletes Deliver Notable Sectional Performances
While Mitchell County stole the spotlight, other Southwest Georgia schools powered strong performances that signal a fierce regional sprint and distance competition. Early County athletes Kayden Kendrix and Andreveion Lee showed speed with second and fourth in the 100-meter dash. Their teammate Jammel Griffin was a standout, securing second in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Terrell County’s Kaleb White finished seventh in the 100-meter and emerged sectional champion in the long jump.
Distance runners from Baconton Charter added to the region’s strong showing. Anthony Escalante placed fourth in both the 800 and 1600-meter runs, while teammate Tyler Hayes impressed with second place in the 3200-meter run. Field events also saw fierce competition with James Barrow of Baconton Charter tying for first in the pole vault and Terrell County’s Karson Green making it to sixth in shot put.
State Championship Hopes Heating Up for Mitchell County
With a commanding sectional performance, Mitchell County shifts focus firmly to the state championships. After winning back-to-back titles, the Eagles aren’t just competing for respect; they’re chasing history. Their balanced squad, led by the electrifying Robinson and backed by a deep roster scoring in sprints, hurdles, distance, and field events, positions them as favorites to defend their crown.
The GHSA State Track and Field Championships will commence on May 11 at the University of Georgia in Athens, where the competition will test teams on an even bigger stage.
