UPDATE: A 32-year-old Eastpointe man has been charged in the shooting of Eddie Jawad, a Macomb Township businessman, outside his home on October 14, 2023. Jawad was grazed in the leg during the incident, which has raised numerous questions about motive and safety in the community.
Authorities confirm that Jasan Delanta Martin faces multiple charges, including assault with intent to commit murder and possession of a weapon by a prohibited person. Martin’s arraignment is set for October 22 at the 41A District Court in Shelby Township.
Jawad was targeted while driving down his driveway at approximately 10:18 AM. Video surveillance captured Martin’s arrival shortly before the shooting at 8:22 AM, where he was seen in a black Ford vehicle. Witnesses reported hearing around seven shots fired from a 9 mm handgun as Jawad exited his garage.
Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham revealed that investigators established a connection between the shooting and a Ford Escape SUV, identified through unusual evidence including brake dust and bird droppings found on the vehicle. The SUV had a stolen license plate that belonged to a Cadillac in Detroit.
Sheriff Wickersham stated, “This investigation has involved 23 search warrants and extensive video surveillance.” The suspect was apprehended on October 19 during a search in Warren, and authorities are piecing together his movements and connections.
Jawad, who has been a business fixture in the area for over three decades, was shot as he drove away from his property on 24 Mile Road. He sustained injuries from broken glass and a bullet graze on his right leg, but authorities confirmed he is recovering.
As details unfold, investigators are still determining whether Jawad and Martin had any prior relationship. Sheriff Wickersham indicated that Jawad had previously expressed concerns about potential threats, adding a layer of anxiety to the community.
The investigation remains active, with officials working diligently to uncover the motive behind this violent incident. Jawad had previously spoken out against a proposed gas station in the township, but Wickersham emphasized that the shooting is “completely unrelated” to those comments.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant as the investigation continues. This shocking event has left the community rattled, highlighting concerns over safety and the potential for violence in familiar surroundings.
